ClearInsights allows you to edit chart fields directly within your visualization. You can modify measures, axes, and date fields to adjust aggregation, formatting, sorting, grouping, and more without changing your underlying search. This article explains how to edit chart fields and apply field-level customization.

Overview
In this article, you will learn how to:
- Edit measure settings (aggregation, formatting, filtering)
- Modify axis settings
- Configure date fields and time bucketing
- Apply conditional formatting
- Change chart colors
For full chart layout, legend positioning, axis configuration, and structural customization, see ClearInsights Max: Chart Configurations.
Edit measure fields
To access these options, select a measure directly on the chart visualization.
You can modify how values are calculated. Available aggregation options:
- Total
- Average
- Minimum
- Maximum
- Total Count
- Unique Count
- Standard Deviation
- Variance
Apply a filter directly to a measure. Available conditions:
- Greater than
- Greater than or equal to
- Less than
- Less than or equal to
- Between
- Is in
- Is not in
If a condition cannot be configured in the filter widget, use the search bar.
You can:
- Adjust column color
- Adjust column name
- Toggle display of data labels
- Change number category (number, percentage, currency)
- Specify units
- Set negative number format:
- -1234
- 1234-
- (1234)
You can also create conditional formatting rules to highlight values above or below defined thresholds.
Note
Conditional formatting applied in charts is independent of table formatting.
Sort measure values in:
- Ascending order
- Descending order
Removing a measure removes it from the visualization. The field remains available in the Not visualized section.
Configure axes
When editing axis fields, additional options are available.
When two axes use the same unit and similar scale, you can group them.
Move an axis to: Left or Right.
Rename the axis directly from the legend or Edit panel.
A modal will appear on the right-hand allowing users to:
- Change the axis name
- Change the position (left or right)
- Set minimum and maximum values
- Change the category, unit, and negative values
Edit date fields
To access date options, select a date field in the chart visualization.
Bucketing is a method for grouping a column in your data. You can group with the options below:
- Detailed
- Hourly
- Day ( Daily, Day of Week, Day of Month, Day of Quarter, Day of Year)
- Week (Weekly, Week of Month, Week of Quarter, Week of Year)
- Month (Monthly, Month of Quarter, Month of Year)
- Quarter (Quarterly, Quarter of Year)
-
Yearly
ClearInsights selects a default time bucket based on your search.
- For example:
- If your search includes "last month," data may default to daily.
- When multiple date keywords are used, ClearInsights preserves the bucketing implied by the first date keyword.
Pro Tip
When comparing different time periods, but you want them to visually overlap to compare more easily, you need to use X of X. ie, How many candidates applied in 2024 vs 2025. You would set this to "Month of Year".
- If you set it to "Monthly," then you will have a chart that goes from Jan 1, 2024, to Dec 31, 2025.
- If you use "Month of year", then it will show both trend lines on a chart from January to December for better comparison.
- If the units are the same, then you also want to group the axis.
You can compare consistent time frames using time-based keywords.
- Period Grouping: To make comparisons more meaningful, it's important to compare the same time frames. For instance, typing "recruiting quarterly" compares recruiting for each quarter.
- Switching Time Periods: Modify your search to analyze "Recruiting Yearly Quarter of Year", and switch to a column chart for better visualization.
- Combining Time Keywords: You can combine keywords like "quarter of year" and "yearly" to compare the same quarter across multiple years.
Date fields support:
- Filtering
- Sorting (ascending or descending)
- Renaming
- Removal
- Note: At least one X-axis column is required.
Change chart colors
You can change colors for:
- Bars
- Lines
- Areas
- Bubbles
- Maps
- Other supported chart types
- Select the color chip next to a value in the legend.
- Choose a new color using the color picker.
- Optionally enter a HEX value directly.
- Changes are saved immediately and remain consistent during your session.
You can also apply conditional formatting rules to change colors based on defined criteria. Conditional color formatting is not supported for line charts.
Final Notes
ClearInsights gives you granular control over how data appears in your visualization. Use these options to refine calculations, formatting, grouping, and display — without restructuring your entire chart.
