Search Basics
Use the search bar to build reports and explore data. As you type, ClearInsights highlights different elements in the query to help you identify them.
Color highlights:
- Attributes will appear with a blue background.
- Measures will appear with a green background.
-
Keywords or Filters will appear with a gray background. These include terms like "top N", "sort by", "after", "quarterly", and more.
Highlight warnings
You may see additional highlighting in the search bar.
-
Yellow highlighting: Indicates an ambiguous value. This means the value could belong to multiple attributes. Review the selected value to confirm it is pulling data from the correct attribute.
-
Red highlighting: Indicates invalid syntax in the search query. Correct the highlighted text before running the search.
Adding attributes to a search
You can add attributes in two ways:
- Option 1: Use the data panel. Double-click an attribute in the data panel to add it to the search.
-
Option 2: Type in the search bar. Type the attribute name directly into the search bar.
Note
The search bar is used to select attributes and build queries. It does not support natural language questions.
Duplicate custom fields
If a custom field included in reporting has the same name as another attribute, ClearInsights automatically adds a number to the field name.
Example:
- Hire date
- Hire date (2)
- Additional duplicates receive sequential numbers.
Blank or Null values
Depending on when custom fields were created, some records may contain:
This is expected behavior when fields were added after some records already existed.
Use the data panel
The data panel on the left side of the screen displays all available attributes.
Use it to explore data fields and add them to your search.

- Choosing the correct attribute: Some attributes may contain similar values. For example, a value like California could appear in multiple attributes. Always confirm which attribute is being used in your search.
Apply Filters
Filters narrow your results to show only the data that meets specific conditions.
Filters can be applied to:
- Searches
- Tables
- Liveboards
- Visualizations
Troubleshooting filter issues
If data does not appear as expected, first review your filters. Conflicting filters are the most common reason data appears incorrect or missing.
Try the following:
- Review all active filters.
- Reset filters if needed.
- Remove filters one at a time.
- Confirm which filter may be excluding the data.
Ways to apply filters
You can apply filters in several ways.
| Filter in the search bar |
When you add a value in your search query, it automatically becomes a filter. |
| Filter from the data panel |
Hover over a column in the data panel and select the filter icon. From there you can:
|
| Bulk filters |
For large datasets, you can filter multiple values at once. Paste a list of values separated by commas. Example: California, Texas, Florida |
| Date filters |
Use the enhanced date picker to filter data by:
|
| Filter from the Y-axis |
You can apply conditions directly from chart axes. To do this: |
| Liveboard filtering |
Filters applied on a Liveboard affect all visualizations on that page. If a Liveboard filter conflicts with an individual Answer filter, the Liveboard filter takes priority. Example:
