Chart Information

How does a chart get selected?

A chart requires that a measure and an attribute is selected.

  1. If ONLY an attribute or ONLY a measure is selected, then a table will be returned.
  2. Any chart requires at least one attribute AND one measure.
  3. ClearInsights chooses a best-fit visualization based on your search. You can toggle between Table and Chart mode.
  4. Some chart types may be unavailable for you to select depending on the columns in your search. For example, if your search does not contain at least one geographical column, you will not be able to select any of the geo chart types. Unavailable chart types are grayed out. Hovering over one will tell you what columns are needed before you can choose it.

Chart Configuration Options

To see the chart configurations below click the gear icon in the upper-right corner of the visualization. This opens the Edit chart panel, which contains the Configure and Settings menus.Edit Chart.png

X-Axis/Y-Axis
Action Description
X-Axis/Y-Axis

You can do the following with the X-Axis and the Y-Axis:

  1. Grouping and ungrouping of axes
  2. Axis renaming
  3. Changing the position of an axis
  4. Changing the axis minimum and maximum values
  5. Changing number formatting on the axis
X-Axis/Y-Axis

You can change the number formatting for all data labels, the options are:

  • Category (Number, Percentage, Currency)
  • Units (K, M, B)
  • Decimals
  • Independent control for each measure on the chart

ClearInsights automatically picks the best category for your data. When you specify a category, you can also specify units.

Slice with Color

You can drag and drop attributes into the slice with color section, which appears for certain chart types, such as column or bar charts if you have more than one attribute in a search.

Note: Users can only use an attribute to slice with color. Slicing with color enables you to separate data already sorted by an attribute into subcategories denoted by color, based on another attribute in your search.

Not Visualized

The best-fit visualization users may place some attributes in the “Not visualized” section. To adjust, click the settings icon and drag these attributes to the desired section. Not Visualized.png

Charts with multiple measures on the y-axis

A stacked column chart displays the measures stacked in the same column, while a column chart displays the measures side by side. The following charts support multiple measures on the y-axis:

  • Column Charts
  • Stacked column charts
  • Bar charts
  • Stacked bar charts
  • Area Charts
  • Stacked area charts
  • Waterfall charts
  • Line charts
  • Line Stacked Column Charts
  • To learn more about each chart type, check out ClearInsights Max: Chart Types.
Reorder labels on the axis or legend

When there are multiple columns on the x- or y-axis or legend of a chart, you can change their position in the chart.

  1. The first field is used as the primary sorting field for the chart.X Axis.png
    • Adding another field adds it after the first one on the axis label or legend.
    • If you want to change the order, you can remove the fields and re-add them in the reverse order.
  2. Under the Y-axis, drag and drop the column chips into your preferred order.
    • The order in which columns appear on the axis or legend is based on the sequence they are added.
  3. Click Apply, If you want to discard the changes you are making, click Reset.Reset and Apply.png

Please Note:

If you close the Configure menu, open the Settings menu, or open the chart selection menu before selecting Apply, ClearInsights does not make your changes.

Hide and Show Values

The legend appears when you have more than one column on an axis, or when you slice with color. Selecting a legend item will hide it from the chart, but does not delete it from your search. You can select the legend item again to show it. To hide and show values:

Display

Customize your chart settings: display labels without hovering, fit the chart to the screen, and adjust the legend location.

Display Options Description
All labels

Note: Users cannot select all labels when they fit to screen, unless the visualization does not have enough data points to require a scroll bar, and thus defaults to fit-to-screen mode.

Fit to Screen Resizes content to match the dimensions of the available screen or window.

X-axis gridlines

Y-axis gridlines

Charts with x- and y-axes can display gridlines.

  • Y-axis gridlines provide horizontal gridlines
  • x-axis gridlines provide vertical gridlines.
  • When you create bar and column charts and slice by color, ClearInsights automatically enables gridlines to make the chart easier to read. You can choose to disable gridlines.
Data Markers

For some charts, like line charts, you can show data markers.Data Markers.png

Regression Line

In order to see this option users need a search with only one attribute and one measure. Otherwise, this option is greyed out in the settings panel. As soon as you modify the search to contain a single measure and attribute, the regression line option is clickable.

You can show regression lines on most types of charts (bar, stacked bar, line, bubble). Regression Line.png

Show Legend

Users have the option to change the legend position, or hide the legend entirely.

  • Legend on right
  • Legend on left
  • Legend on top
  • Legend on bottom
  • Click the Show legend toggle to hide the legend
